- Sure - it's for local hosts which are not known to the nameserver. If you are
- only using SLIP/PPP, this is probably not applicable. On the other hand, if
- you are on a LAN, and the LAN is not connected to a nameserver, then you would
- use the hosts file to name the nodes on the LAN. Most LANs, especially if they
- don't have permanent Internet connectivity, don't have a DNS server.

- Also, assuming the hosts file is checked before a dns search is done,
- including often-used hosts will speed things up as well as ensure a
- trouble-free connection when the nameserver goes down. (Assuming you have
- only one listed).
